It was a real mind-blowing experience for me when I first got into the game, and looking back I can see how much its influenced the industry. The gameplay is just as fun as ever, and actually it’s made me realise just how ahead of its time the gameplay was back in the day. The music, the atmosphere and the dialogue really add up well, and I still get a real sense of ‘place’ from these locations. It feels so amazing to roam around the old locations like Hell’s Kitchen. I will probably replay the game with one of the big overhaul mods at a later date however. I saw on Reddit that people were recommending that newcomers install mods with QoL improvements but honestly I don’t think that’s necessary. I immediately got back into the Deus Ex gameplay mechanics and - I guess there must be some nostalgia at play here - I am amazed at how well the gameplay holds up. I know there are some great mods out there that add gameplay/quality “improvements” but that’s not what I was looking for here.įirst impressions are that this is like putting on an old pair of slippers. It’s basically a high definition remaster of the original game, which is exactly what I wanted. High resolution textures (no change to design). New launcher that adds widescreen support and better driver selection. It’s pretty much perfect for a long-time fan: I went looking for a suitable mod, and eventually settled on New Vision. I initially tried it completely vanilla, but the 4:3 aspect ratio was pretty annoying. Partly that’s because of my gaming backlog, but also now that I have kids it’s pretty hard to do any PC gaming (PC is in kitchen, consoles are in living room).Įventually, however, my longing to replay DE got too much, and I decided to go through it again. The original Deus Ex is one of my favourite games of all time, but strangely enough I haven’t played it for about 15 years.
